Adult children taking parents into their homes: effects of childhood living arrangements

Article Abstract:

Research has been undertaken into whether childhood living arrangements have an impact on adult children's views on taking a parent into their home and on whether adult children ever enter into such an arrangement. It was established that people raised by single fathers are especially unlikely to be in favour of parental coresidence. In contrast, there is a high level of parental coresidence among people who were brought up by a mother who was single or remarried. It is concluded that childhood living arrangements affect both normative and functional solidarity relating to parental coresidence.
