Structural flaws in the bridge form basic research on marriage to interventions for couples

Article Abstract:

Methodological questions arising from an analysis of the Gottman, Coan, Carrere and Swanson study of newlywed couples, marital therapy and education, are discussed. Concerns include the nonrandom selection of research subjects, procedural issues relating to observational and physiological data and failure to control for factors that may have differentiated couples initially. It is concluded that the study could influence both couples and practitioners in a way that exceeds the scope of the underlying research.

An empirical investigation of sampling strategies in marital research

Article Abstract:

Sampling techniques on samples obtained in marital research can be modified to achieve the same sophistication as methods of studying marriage. Five ways in which sampling strategies in marital research can be improved are suggested. These include publishing details of sampling procedures in reports, avoiding convenience and snowball sampling, except in exploratory or qualitative research, using sampling methods that allow estimates of the degree of sampling bias in the sample, using with caution those techniques that merely improve response rates and experimenting with new strategies for sampling underrepresented populations.

Analysis of individual growth curves is a useful technique in analyzing longitudinal data in marital research. This method assesses individual change over time, or growth curves, using multiple waves of data. Approaches currently in use generate incomplete and potentially inaccurate descriptions of how marriages change since they use only two waves of data at a time. A step-by-step guide to the technique is presented.
