Couples watching television: gender, power and the remote control

Article Abstract:

Television watching becomes a source of conflict in heterosexual couples when stereotypical notions of gender and power are furthered by the use of the remote control device (RCD). Men are heavier users of the RCD, and use it to avoid commercials and dominate program selection. They have more power than women while watching television, as they bind their choice of programs on women. Women resort to child care or other household activities, which strengthens the stereotypical gender notions. In lesbian and gay couples also, one person is a heavier user of RCD.

Gender and family work in one-parent households

Article Abstract:

There has been little research on any difference in how single mothers and fathers handle housework. The data from the 1987-88 National Survey of Families and Households shows that interactions with children are about the same in one-parent homes with parents of either sex. However, the single mothers spend more time in private interactions and feminine household jobs while the fathers spend more time in playing and in masculine household jobs. These results are consistent with gender theory.

The marital construction of gender through work and family decisions: a qualitative analysis

Article Abstract:

Married couples' decision regarding work and family are directed towards the construction of gender in marriages. The couples generally adopt traditional views which are in the men's favour. This restricts the economic independence of women. Traditional cultural methods are considered during the microstructural relationship processes. The family decisions depend on the couple's relationship, participation in paid work and gender attitudes in marriage.
