Gender, status, and domestic violence: an integration of feminist and family violence approaches

Article Abstract:

Research into domestic violence has used self- and partner-reported data from Wave 1 of the National Survey of Families and Households in the US to assess links between sociodemographic characteristics, gender, status compatibility or incompatibility, and domestic assaults. It was established that men may use violence as a tool for regaining their dominant position if they do not have the material means of expressing or maintaining power. It is important that causes of domestic violence are assessed in terms of both feminist views and sociodemographic theory.

Family violence and the perpetration of adolescent dating violence: Examining social learning and social control processes

Article Abstract:

The links between exposure to family violence and adolescent dating violence are examined. The link was found to be mediated by the social-learning-theory-derived variables of acceptance of dating violence and aggressive conflict-response style. The link for males, was found to be mediated by the social-learning-theory-derived variable of positive outcome expectations and the control-theory-derived variable of a belief in conventional societal rules.
