A father recounts how his 'do as I say' reaction to his children's attempts at self-determination, changed allowing freedom of choice in such matters as dress and hair style. Children begin asserting themselves at an earlier age now, but these attempt to develop personality should be nurtured by parents.

Parents should avoid spanking and other physical or negative punishments when disciplining a child. A better way to control misbehavior in children is to talk with them gently but firmly, telling them that such behavior is not pleasing and must not be done again.
