The launch of ITV, the UK's first commercial television service, in Sep 1955, marked a new era in national culture. From that point, it became much harder for the authorities to control or limit what was broadcast, and it marked the end of the battle for those who saw commercial television as a threat to social stability. The introduction of commercial television had a considerable impact on consumer trends, and also forced the BBC to make changes.
