How society views stepfamilies

Article Abstract:

Stepfamilies are viewed by societies in two major ways. One of the ways that societies look at stepfamilies is as an incomplete institution and thus are generally ignored in legal and social policymaking and by social institutions such as schools and religious organizations. The other perspective sees stepfamilies as stigma, wherein they are perceived as less functional and more problem-plagued compared to nuclear families. The nuclear family, which is the product of a first marriage, is considered the ideal family and influences perceptions of family life and functioning.
