Living arrangements and family formation attitudes in early adulthood

Article Abstract:

Researchers have used information from an intergenerational panel study of young adults and their mothers to assess the impact of living arrangements on changes in views on family formation. It was established that there is a need to differentiate between cohabitation and other independent living arrangements when looking at the impact of these experiences on family formation values. It is also important to take into account the duration of experiences of nonfamily living arrangements, rather than simply their occurrence. Cohabitation boosts acceptance of divorce among young people, but this was not the case with other independent living arrangements.

Sexual exclusivity among dating, cohabiting, and married women

Article Abstract:

Cohabiting women are similar to dating women but not to married women, when sexual exclusivity symbolizes the partner's assurance. Committment after marriage is independent of the premarital cohabitation status of the partners. However, cohabitation prior to marriage has a negative effect on sexual exclusivity after marriage. Women and men who are more educated than their partners and who cohabited before marriage are likely to posses a secondary sex partner.

The stability of cohabitation relationships: the role of children

Article Abstract:

Examinations of information from the 1990 Family and Friends Survey on 3,015 cohabitation relationships revealed the positive role played by children in enhancing the nature of live-in relationships. However, characteristics of children in a cohabitation relationship including sex and age had negligible stabilizing effects on such relationships.
