Measurement issues in the assessment of the experiences of parenthood

Article Abstract:

Assessment of key parenthood constructs is needed to address the paucity of research on contemporary parents and their experiences of parenthood. Current research in this area assesses complex concepts such as parent satisfaction, parental role strain and parental competence with measures that are empirically derived, rather than measures with adequate conceptual and/or psychometric foundation. Existing measures designed to assess constructs central to the study of contemporary parents are criticized and recommendations for improving their quality are presented.

The parental comparison level index: a measure for assessing parental rewards and costs relative to expectations

Article Abstract:

Changes in American society have led social scientists to develop a new measure for assessing experiences of parenthood. The Parental Comparison Level Index (PCLI) focuses particularly on the role of expectations and comparison in evaluation of parenthood. Application of the PCLI to a group of 439 parents reveals that its two subscales of costs and rewards are valid, advantageous and produce reliable data. The subscales facilitate comparison of experience against expectations, and give a more complete representation of the experiences of parenthood.

Survey approaches to the assessment of family functioning: conceptual, operational, and analytical issues

Article Abstract:

Conceptual, operational and analytical issues associated with survey approaches to the assessment of family functioning are discussed. A multidimensional conceptualization of family functioning found within a family systems framework is described. The psychometric properties of assessments of family functioning are discussed. Measurement strategies and analytic techniques which allow the use of the level of family functioning as the unit of analysis are also examined.
