Article Abstract:

An University of Notre Dame sociology professor discusses her publishing experience. With the exception of one article, she has always rewritten and resubmitted her work to another journal after receiving a rejection but that does not stop her from being unhappy with rejections and questioning the editors' intelligence. She advises all doctoral graduates to publish as much as possible. The professor believes there is a strong element of chance in publishing but that it is very important and so plans to continue submitting her work regardless of her stature in the field.

Publish as soon as you can

Article Abstract:

An Arizona State University sociology professor first published three articles based on his theses and dissertations with the help of mentors. His advice to new professors is to publish as often as possible and, while using a mentor to get the initial publishing credits is helpful, professors should attempt sole authorship as soon as possible. Most of his mentoring was done for his colleagues while still with the US Census Bureau. The professor uses clarity and audience's interest in the topic when reviewing articles for publishing.

Defining families through caregiving patterns

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the caregiving activities within families and family members to define families in terms of caregiving patterns. Family members that are considered in the study as most in need of help include individuals who are too young or old to care for themselves. Aside from care, aid across family boundaries also involves monetary gifts that enable families to buy care. Results showed that the family that a member can usually count on in times of trouble is the parental family.
