Political systems and responsibility for family issues: the case of change in Lithuania

Article Abstract:

A sociological research conducted in Lithuania indicates that the responsibility of its government in addressing family issues has dramatically changed mainly because of the change in the country's political system. The Lithuanian government is found to be more concerned with family-oriented values than the Soviet government. The study also reveals significant changes in the structures and functions of the Lithuanian family after the transition from a totalitarian to a post-Soviet society.

Redefining western families

Article Abstract:

The western concept of family needs to be redefined due to social and structural changes in western societies. The conventional definition of family is no longer satisfactory because many families have become dysfunctional, and because of radical changes in authority structures of the family and society's changing perceptions of gender. Thus, the four criteria for redefining western families are self-perception, public perception, law and history and tradition.

Family as a set of dyads

Article Abstract:

Definitions that can be applied to the concept of family can be categorized into theoretical or nominal, operational, phenomenological and empirical. Each of these four definitions of family are discussed. The use of a system of dyadic units to define and conceptualize a family also provides other perspectives that broaden what a family is considered to be. Thus, any perspective should not be taken for granted when defining a family.
