Psychological adjustment of college students from families of divorce

Article Abstract:

Positive parent-child relationships and the smooth relationship of parents are the strongest indicators of the favorable adjustment of children from divorced families to college life. According to an examination of the variable groupings which influenced college adjustment, 'inside family' variables are the strongest predictors of healthy adjustment compared with 'outside family' variables such as negative life events and social support and 'individual' variables which include age at the time of divorce and gender.

Adolescents from divorced and intact families

Article Abstract:

Few differences exist between adolescents from divorced families and those from intact families. A study on the effects of divorce on relationships and psychological variables revealed that adolescents from divorced families felt less intimacy with their fathers and less social support, while reporting that they assume more family responsibilities. Aside from these variables, divorce appears to have had minimal socioemotional effects on adolescents from divorced families.

Family climate, family structure and self-esteem in college females: the physical- vs. psychological wholeness divorce debate revisited

Article Abstract:

Parental divorce is linked to poorer self-esteem among female college students, but this may be due to a loss of access to a biological parent and not to the increased likelihood of exposure to abusive environments among children of divorced parents. This affirms the physical-wholeness perspective, which contends that the loss of a parent in the family structure causes problems in adjustment.
