Single mothers with custody following divorce

Article Abstract:

Family scientists need to research the actual experiences of single divorced mothers rather than accepting the stereotype that single parent families are automatically worse for children. Recovery from the experience of divorce must be accepted as a long term transition while the development of social networks can improve a single parent family's situation. Recognition of the experiences of single mothers can help the development of intervention programs.

Single fathers with custody following separation and divorce

Article Abstract:

Little research exists concerning single custodial fathers and yet they are becoming more common as the stereotypical belief that children must be cared for by mothers is being questioned. Though single custodial fathers often experience difficulties, research shows that many are still successful and can take advantage of support networks for single parents. Recognition of this new family structure is necessary to prepare support and services for them.

Noncustodial fathers following divorce

Article Abstract:

More research into the experiences of noncustodial fathers is necessary to understand why many of them have difficulty meeting the financial and emotional needs of their children. Stereotypical classifications of noncustodial fathers as hard-hearted fail to consider the fathers' difficulties in adapting to new, more-feminine roles while support for fathers who adopt new roles is lacking in society.
