Wiretapping and cryptography

Article Abstract:

Despite the many benefits to be accrued from court-ordered intercepts, or wiretapping, new communications technologies and services are not being designed to meet the requirements of law enforcement. The FBI and the Department of Justice are addressing these problems by proposing legislation for digital telephony that would require PBX and communications service providers to ensure that their technology offerings do not hamper the government's ability to intercept communications. Although some observers believe such legislation would stymie innovation, security and privacy, intercept capability would actually lead to smarter, more secure and more marketable systems. Likewise, arguments against cryptography regulation do not outweigh the requirement that US laws reflect a social contract, nor would it be easy for criminals to acquire and use cryptography products not complying with government standards.
