A less than friendly exchange of a child between divorced parents can cause much anxiety in the child. Parents should stick to schedules and be cordial or at least businesslike. They should acknowledge the child's feelings about the confrontations and not turn the child into an informer.

Stepparents who become biological parents for the first time should be careful to address the insecurities of their stepchildren. Suggestions include telling the stepchild privately about the pregnancy and that the child should not worry of losing their stepparents' love.
