The legacy of grandparenting: childhood experiences with grandparents and current involvement with grandchildren

Article Abstract:

Grandparents' childhood experience of grandparenting is an important influential factor in their involvement with their own grandchildren, according to research which examined two longitudinal studies of rural families in Iowa. The experience is a more important factor in grandparenting behavior than whether or not the grandparent resides in the same home as the grandchildren. These results support the theory that individuals learn their family roles through their family culture.

American children view their grandparents: linked lives across three rural generations

Article Abstract:

A longitudinal study of the attitudes of children and their parents from 398 families indicated that adolescent children from farm families perceived their grandparents, especially their father's parents, as role models, deeply respected and shared good relationships with them. Parent-grandparent relationships shaped the nature of children-grandparent interaction in both farm and nonfarm families.

The legacy of a grandparent's divorce: consequences for ties between grandparents and grandchildren

Article Abstract:

This article examines how a grandparent divorce influences grandparent-grandchild relationships. The author maintains divorce among grandparents is negatively associated with the grandparent-grandchild relationship, in which divorced grandparents, especially grandfathers, have weaker relationships with their grandchild, resulting from weaker bonds with their adult children.
