Easy listening

Article Abstract:

Sound systems for venues have often been an afterthought, but high quality sound is available to all at reasonable cost with the use of the CD. In cinemas a major programme for upgrading to digital sound has begun, however other venues depend on the expertise of a sound system designer. Basic designs involve the selection of suitable amplifiers and speakers and the appropriate placement. Industry standard software packages can provide good design capabilities, enabling the sound system designer to build a computer model of the venue together with data on reflected and direct sound, speech intelligibility and reverberation times.

Caterpillars ate my front page

Article Abstract:

The Long Island daily Newsday has an exceptional front page which separates it from other newspapers. The front page usually contains a large graphic picture of the main news that catches the notice of the readers. The edition that carried the news story about the return of the gypsy caterpillar to Long Island had as its cover picture caterpillars eating the front page. Ned Levine of Newsday came up with this idea of the worms exposing parts of the third page in their process of eating. Photographers, designers and illustrators develop shortcuts to incorporate these ideas.
