Of mice and men

Article Abstract:

New treatments for cystic fibrosis are being researched at the human genetics unit of the Medical Research Council at Edinburgh University, UK. The research team has successfully bred mutant mice with defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) genes to aid the research, with the normal CFTR gene successfully transferred to the mice's nasal tissue to restore some normal gene function. A sheep with defective CF genes is due to be created to take the research further. A drug treatment is unlikely to be widely available for some years, however.
