Ahold expands Malaysian arm

Article Abstract:

Yahona Corp has sold seven supermarkets in northern Malaysia for an undisclosed sum to leading Dutch retail concern Ahold. The Malaysian government is keen to establish a nationwide network of supermarkets, and for this reason Ahold is likely to continue to expand there. At present, its operations in Malaysia are managed by a joint venture concern in which it holds a 60% stake. It is also considering expanding its operations in northern Europe.

Ahold buys Shanghai supermarket chain

Article Abstract:

Dutch food retailer Ahold will become the leading foreign retail group in China following the purchase of 22 supermarkets in Shanghai, China, from Yaohan Liancheng. Ahold will now have a total of 40 outlets in the city. It will convert all the new outlets to the TOPS format during the course of 1998. Other developments at Ahold include the restructuring of its Jamin speciality confectionery retail chain in the Netherlands.

Laurus expands in Spain
