The 1997 wines from the Alsace region of France range from dull and plodding to balanced and opulent. Most of the wines are whites; Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Muscat. The top scoring wine from this vintage was the Hugel Gewurztraminer Alsace Selection de Grains Nobles 1997 ($140), while the best value wine was the Paul Blanck Pinot Blanc Alsace 1997 ($12).

Austria's two main white wine varieties, Riesling and the indigenous Gruner Veltliner, offering food-friendly flavors at reasonable prices, present an interesting menu of fruit, spice and mineral elements, and are made without the influence of oak. Austrian vintners made good vintage 2004 white wines despite the vagaries in weather.
