Auchan launches hostile bid for Docks de France

French hypermarket company Auchan has launched a hostile takeover bid for rival Docks de France. Auchan purchased a 10.6% stake in Auchan during May 1996, then 7% more between the initial purchase and June 24. The Auchan bid values Docks de France at 18 billion French Francs. The Docks de France groups includes Mammouth hypermarkets, Atac supermarkets and Eco Service convenience stores. Industry observers have suggested that a 'friendlier' retailer may come to Docks' assistance.

Eroski to focus on franchises
