Wines released in 1996 are profiled. They are rated on a scale of one to 100, with tasting notes and prices provided. Some very good clarets from 1993 and 1994 are on the market for about $15 to $35. A 1993 Chateau Canon-La gaffeliere St-Emilion at $30 is rated 92.

The 1988, 1989 and 1990 Bordeaux vintages are very good. The 1991 vintage was not particular good, but the 1991 Chateau Cos d'Estournel St.-Estephe is the editor's choice. The weather's effect on winemaking is discussed, and the top rated wines are evaluated.
