Serious script: BBC head of comedy Geoffrey Perkins is tired of the British sitcom being run down

Article Abstract:

British sitcoms are often run down and treated with disdain, which is partly because there are some bad sitcoms, and also it is often difficult to tel bad sitcoms from good at the beginning. Fawlty Towers original transmission received almost universal hostile reviews. The writing and the cast often takes time to gel and it is getting more difficult to get people to try new shows in the first place with competitive schedules. It is important to have longer runs and longer running series as it often is not until the third series that a show may be seen as successful.

Mona Baker's double standard

Article Abstract:

Issues connected to the decision by Mona Baker to fire Gideon Toury and Miriam Schlesinger from the editorial boards of two scholarly periodicals that she owns, Translation Studies Abstracts and The Translator, for being public representatives of Israel are examined. The examination is conducted from the perspective of how can she simultaneously justify her position as a 'private citizen' but sack the two individuals as they are 'public' representatives of Israel simply because they are affiliated with Israeli universities.
