Innovation is key to success in competitive food packaging market

Article Abstract:

Packaging output in Europe amounted to $121 billion in 1996, with 55% of the total accounted for by food and drink applications, according to figures from market researcher Market Tracking International. Some 40% of food packaging value is accounted for by plastics, with the sector set to reach 60% by 2005. The largest food packaging markets are Germany and Italy, each with 20% of sales. It is forecast that annual growth in the packaging industry will reach some 2%, with strongest growth expected in Spain and Italy.
