French food safety investigation reveals worrying results

Article Abstract:

10 branded food products from companies including Herta, Fleury Michon and Findus in hypermarkets and superamrkets in Calais were found to contain high levels of bacteria, following tests by the regional consumers' association (CRC). The products included pate, frozen pizzas, ice cream and cheese and the CRC attributes the problem to foodstuffs being not being kept at suitably low temperatures and poor staff training.

UK simplifies food regulations

Article Abstract:

A simplified set of food regulations have been introduced in the UK covering spreadable fats, cheese, cream, bread and flour, aimed at encouraging innovation whilst safeguarding consumers. Technically it was illegal to sell fromage frais and flavoured cream and there were complex restrictions on the names of soft drinks. There will be further changes during 1996 to make the regulations simpler.

Stagnation in Slovenian food industry due to lost markets

Article Abstract:

Food industry output in Slovenia declined slightly in 1995, with just two of fifteen staple food products recording an increase. Among the main reasons for the fall are the suspension of economic links with Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the loss of trade with Macedonia and Croatia. Slovenia food exports for 1995 fell by 9.6%.
