JAPAN: BEER SHIPMENTS JAN-NOV 1999

Asahi held a 43.6% share of beer shipments in January to November 1999, totalling 2,274,316 kilolitres (kl), up 2.5%, followed by Kirin with a 36.1% share of beer shipments which came to 1,885,228 kl, down 12%, followed by Sapporo with a 14.4% share of beer shipments for 749,415 kl, down 15.2%, Suntory with a 5% share, for 259,992 kl, down 13.2%, and Orion with a 0.9% share, for 46,662 kl, down 9.6%. All together beer shipments in Japan totalled 5,215,380 kl, down 6.8%. Asahai Breweries was the only company which achieved growth during this period.

Asahi continued to be the only company whose beer shipments did not decrease in 1999, with a 43.4% market share and beer shipments of 2,514,348 kl, up 2.4%, while Kirin, which held a 36.2% market share, shipped 2,845,056 kl of beer, down 12.1%; Sapporo which hold a 14.5% market share, shipped 839,094 kl, down 14.6%; and Suntory, which held a 5% market share, shipped 288,947 kl, down 12.2%. Japan shipped a total of 5,790,426 kl of beer in 1999, down 6.8%.

JAPAN: KIRIN, SAPPORO'S 450 ML PET BEER BOTTLES

Article Abstract:

In an effort to attract young people who enjoy drinking beer while walking, Sapporo Breweries and Kirin Breweries are going to bring out 450 ml polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles beer in May 2000. These bottles will be priced slightly less than the 500 ml can or bottle.
