Little change in UK eating habits

Article Abstract:

The National Food Survey shows a slight rise in consumption of most foods and a gradual trend towards healthier products. The average weekly expenditure on household food has changed little. The consumption of whole milk, cheese and some meats has fallen, but fish consumption has remained stable. Consumtpion of fresh fruit has increased, although tinned and dried fruit sales have fallen. There was a marked fall in potato consumption mainly because of increased prices.

Food 'costs' less in developed countries

Article Abstract:

A study by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) analysed the length of time it would take an average person to earn enough to purchase 15 specific foods including flour, cheese, milk, eggs and rice, in 16 cities. It found that Ottawa consumers worked 2 hours and 31 minutes to purchase the foods while consumers in Brasilia worked 12 hours 37 minutes to purchase the same items. The 15 items cost the most in Tokyo but consumers worked five hours to purchase them.
