Merlion falls victim to recession

Merlion sought bankruptcy protection, adding the winery to a growing list filing Chapter 11. The winery, which opened in 1985, owes back taxes and is feeling the effects of greater competition, the recession, tight lending policies and increased taxes on wine.

Whitehall Lane threatened with foreclosure

Wine industry insiders reported that Sanwa Bank was preparing to foreclose on Whitehall if the company did not make payments on bad loans. Whitehall management denies the allegations, and Sanwa refused to commend.
