Newly rated California Merlots

Merlot wines never before rated in 'The Wine Spectator' are evaluated on a scale of one to 100, with no tasting notes provided. A 1990 Estate William Baccala Napa Valley Merlot at $10 is rated 90, as is a 1990 Beringer Howell Mountain Bancroft Ranch at $29.

Rating newly released California Merlots

Article Abstract:

A vertical blind tasting of the Merlots of 1986 to the present found several excellent wines and many disappointing ones. The highest rated is a 1989 Sullivan Napa Valley at $20. It is rated 92 on a scale of 100. Approximately 200 wines are evaluated.

New Merlots reviewed

Article Abstract:

Approximately 150 Merlots vintages ranging from 1986 to 1991 are rated. The top wines, both receiving a 91 on a scale of 100 are a 1990 Shafer Napa Valley at $18 and a 1989 Beringer Howell Mountain Bancroft Ranch.
