Ontario's big thaw

Article Abstract:

Ontario's Niagara Peninsula has long been known for ice wine, but it is now also producing other promising white wines. There are also red wines that are not bad, but they are not as consistent as the whites. The top-scoring wine from Ontario was Henry of Pelham Riesling Niagara Peninsula Ice Wine 1997 ($50). The highest-scoring wine that was not an ice wine was Thirty Bench Chardonnay Niagara Peninsula Beamsville Bench Reserve 1995, scoring 90 on the 100-point scale.

Selecting the top 100: France dominates our picks of the year's most exciting wines

Article Abstract:

The excellent 1995 and 1996 vintages in France have imparted such excellence on the wines produced that many of 1998's top wine picks come from the country. Bordeaux wines from the 1995 vintages are especially strong. Many California wines made the list. Other countries are represented, though German wines were excluded due to an upcoming feature.
