Promises, promises: Germany's 1994 Rieslings are very good, but don't live up to their advance billing

The 1994 Riesling vintage merits an overall 86 on a scale of one to 100. The best wines Rieslings are Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein. A handful of excellent bottles stand out, and tasting notes are provided for these. An alphabetical rating guide is included.

Tradition fails the Rheingau

A new breed of young winemakers has elbowed out great old estates such as the Rheingau, one of the most famous estates owned by aristocrats. This is because the most popular and oldest estates in the German wine industry no longer produce wines of superior quality.

Record prices set in Germany

Germany has produced some excellent wines since 1989, and the wines of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region are selling at prices that defy the recession. A 1989 Fritz Haag Riesling sold for $1,063 a bottle.
