Safeway results not good enough to dispel merger rumours

Article Abstract:

Operating profits at Safeway, the fourth-largest food retailer in the UK, declined by 8% in 1997 from 1996 to 426 million pounds sterling, not taking into account the costs of the concern's store portfolio review and redundancy programme. Pre-tax profits were down 13% to 375 million pounds sterling before exceptional costs. However, sales rose by 6% to 7.5 billion pounds sterling. There are renewed rumours of a possible merger with Asda, although this has been strongly denied by Safeway.

However, turnover from continuing operations still rose 9%, and the average turnover from each outlet is now ??6m. The acquired stores and 29 new openings that featured in 1998 brought Mercadona's total number of outlets to 385
