Tough times for California wines at auction: but that also means there are good values out there

Consumers can find some excellent bargains, but California vintners and auctioneers are unhappy with the drop in value of vintage wines. Some wines are down as much as 41% in value, but 1973 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars SLV has increased by 100% since the first quarter of 1995.

Vino magnifico: Italian fine wines emerge at auction

Article Abstract:

Fine Italian wines represent only about 2% of wines sold at auctions, but prices have risen for many as wine buyers discover these premium offerings. Prices of Antinora Solaia wines from 1985 and 1990 increased dramatically in price from 1996 to 1997.

A Sherry-Lehmann with Sotheby's auction held in New York on Sep 16, 1995, resulted in 97% of the wine lots being sold. Prices came in 5% stronger than estimated. A jeroboam of 1945 Chateau Petrus sold for $37,350. Other sales are also discussed.
