Anger over changes to US food claim regulations

Article Abstract:

A proposed change to the regulations regarding labelling of food in the US has resulted in fierce opposition from representatives of consumers who fear that food and drug safety would be compromised. Food manufacturers have been calling for a change to the rules which only allow health claims on packaging for food if they have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Supporters of the changes point out that the FDA takes a considerable length of time before allowing any health labelling to go ahead.

US may relax laws on food labelling claims

Article Abstract:

Legislation on food labelling claims should soon receive final approval i the US Congress, in spite of opposition from consumer activist and health lobbies. Companies would be able to provide important information on the health benefits their products provide. They currently have to obtain approval for each health or nutrition claim. The Grocery Manufacturers of America feels that the legislation will not provide sufficient food regulation.
