Saviour of the opera

Article Abstract:

Lifelong Chinese opera performer Shang Changrong developed a new conception of Peking Opera to attract younger audiences and arouse public interest in his ancient art form. Born in 1940, he was raised in a family of Peking opera performers, and began studying the hualian type of performance at the age of 10. Since 1987 he has worked on 'Cao Cao and Yang Xiu,' a fast-paced opera illustrating complex relationships. Now he is working on 'The Dream of the King of Qi,' based on Shakespeare's King Lear, using Western instruments.
