Fruits and vegetables: protective or just fellow travelers?

Article Abstract:

Studies of overall dietary patterns may be more informative than those attempting to single out the benefits of a particular food item. Research has shown that people who follow one healthy dietary recommendation, such as eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, tend to lead a more healthy overall lifestyle. These healthy behaviors may include not smoking, drinking in moderation, or exercising regularly. Researchers tend to agree, however, on the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables as a source of important nutrients even without a direct link to reduced risk factors.

Long-term fetal programming of body composition and longevity

Article Abstract:

Human body composition, adult weight gain, susceptibility to diabetes and other diseases, and longevity may be the results of fetal programming. Maternal nutrition prior to pregnancy appears to play an important role in subsequent fetal growth trajectory and birth weight. The mother's folate and protein status, protein intake, essential fatty acids, and iron level also may affect fetal size. Resetting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis may prove useful in determining long-term health.

Portion sizes in dietary assessment: issues and policy implications

Article Abstract:

The difficulty in accurately calculating food portion sizes has implications for weight maintenance, dietary counseling and public policy. Difficulties in estimating portion sizes can not be explained readily and are uniformly spread in the population groups of various age, gender, social status, body weight and training. Reliable information about food intake, food composition and portion size is necessary for correct calculation of energy and nutrient intake.
