Oxidants and antioxidants in development and differentiation

Article Abstract:

Cellular oxidation may influence differentiation through the alteration of genetic expression in the course of normal development. It has been shown that cells increase production of oxidants during development and this may be the determining factor in cellular differentiation. Changes in gene expression are related to the oxidants' influence on calcium metabolism. Antioxidants in the medium may deter differentiation and the beneficial influence of antioxidating vitamins may arise from their other biological properties.

Metheny, who was born in 1954 in Lee's Summit, MO, played the trumpet and French horn before teaching himself to play the guitar at age 14. He became the youngest instructor at Berklee College of Music at the age of 19. His music is popular among both rock and jazz fans.
