Protein undernutrition as the major cause of decreased immune function in the elderly: clinical and functional implications

Article Abstract:

A study on the impact of nutritional status on immune responses in healthy elderly people reveals a close relationship between malnutrition and immunodeficiency among the aged. This result indicates that nutritional status needs to be measured when immune responses are examined. The study compared a group of healthy elderly persons with a group whose nutritional status is lower. These two groups were again compared with another group of healthy young adults.

Effects of exercise on daily energy expenditure

Article Abstract:

The benefit of resistance training programs is not well established in the context of reducing diets. Resistance weight training increases muscle strength in the elderly while preventing disability. Chronic resistance training may be associated with a higher overall resting metabolic rate. The effect of exercise on energy expenditure needs further investigation either by itself or in conjunction with the intake of reduced calories.

Energetic adaptation to chronic disease in the elderly

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the physiological impact of chronic disease on the elderly, focusing on weight loss and management of energy expenditure. The effects of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and congestive heart failure on energy balance and metabolism in elderly patients are studied.
