Super(65) zinc metabolism is altered during diabetic pregnancy in rats

Article Abstract:

Super65zinc (65Zn) metabolism is assessed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic and nondiabetic pregnant rats. During organogenesis or on day 12 of gestation, less 65Zn was retained in the pancreas, spleen, erythrocytes, plasma and bone of untreated diabetic dams. At day 18 of gestation, there was decreased retention of 65Zn in many body parts of untreated diabetic dams as compared to controls. Less 65Zn was detected in the products of conception of untreated diabetic dams, which may be due to decreased placental transport or altered Zn-binding ligands in these dams and fetus. Administration of insulin significantly restores the Zn metabolism derangements caused by streptozocin.

Carbohydrate intake determines pancreatic acinar amylase activity and release despite chronic alcoholemia in rats

Article Abstract:

The influence of alcoholism on exocrine pancreatic enzyme activity after a carbohydrate meal was investigated. Pancreatic tissues were analyzed after subjecting the rats to a 14-day high alcohol-low carbohydrate liquid diet. Results initially indicated that pancreatic tissue and amylase activities were decreased by alcohol consumption. Chymotrypsin and trypsin activities were not affected. Alcohol also induced anorexia and consequent lack of nutrients thus the reduced amylase activity was found to be due to decreased carbohydrate intake and not to alcohol ingestion per se.
