Zinc nutritional status modulates the response of 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol to calcium depletion in rats

Article Abstract:

A study was done on the effect of zinc nutritional status on the response of 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol to calcium depletion in rats. Results show that the circulating levels of 1,25(OH)2D which is reflective of renal production are influenced by the zinc nutritional status of rats during calcium depletion. Dietary deprivation of calcium results to an increase in levels of 1,25(OH)D secondary to enhanced 25 hydroxycholecalciferol-1-alpha hydroxylase activity.

Dietary vitamin C intake and concentrations in the body fluids and cells of male smokers and nonsmokers

Article Abstract:

Ascorbic acid is an important antioxidant. Smoking introduces varied oxidizing agents into the human body. The ascorbic acid levels in plasma, mononuclear leukocytes, alveolar macrophages and bronchoalveolar lavage were determined in smokers and nonsmokers. Higher concentrations were found in bronchoalveolar lavage and alveolar macrophages of smokers. This suggests that they are the body's first defense against free radicals found in cigarette smoke.

Retention of 14C label is lower in old than in young wistar rats after oral dosing with (14C)pyridoxine

Article Abstract:

(14C)pyridoxine was administered orally to ten young and ten old wistar rats to determine the retention of 14C label. Results show no difference in the absorption of the orally dosed (14C)pyridoxine-HCl among the young and old rats however total body retention of the test substance was significantly lower in old than in the young rats. Further tests have shown that there is an age-related difference in liver and muscle vitamin B6 disposition.
