QC program elicits immediate reaction

Article Abstract:

A statistical process control (SPC) system based on Northwest Analytical Inc.'s (NWA) Quality Monitor SPC software program has improved quality control at Boise Cascade Corp.'s Yakima, WA sawmill. The system relays lumber measurements taken with calipers to a workstation where the data is processed and displayed. As a result, the mill has improved size control and reduced claims from remanufacturers. The system is one result of the total quality management (TQM) program instituted at the mill.

'Green' fingerjointing can boost mill income

Article Abstract:

Mills can make their materials go further and increase profitability by producing new lumber through a process called green fingerjointing. The new lumber is made from low grade green scrap and residual wood by a process of recovery, gluing, and forming. Residues that would otherwise be sold for chips and hog fuel can be turned into lumber that sells for $600 to $800. New urethane glues and recovery technology makes green fingerjointing possible.

Chile's forestry future requires help from lawmakers

Article Abstract:

Chile's Congress must pass legislation that will provide a legal foundation for the forestry industry and ensure opportunities for investment. The world's economic crisis has resulted in the loss of more than 5,000 forest industry jobs in the country. During the past six years, Chile's Congress has not passed legislation to supervise the industry. It is not clear at this time which forests are considered off-limits to development.
