A Do-It-Yourself Funeral: Clyde Spivey, like more and more people, chose to bypass the American way of death

Article Abstract:

Most states do not require mortuaries, cemeteries or embalming to be involved when burying the dead. When Clyde Spivey discovered that he had pancreatic cancer and a few months to live, he decided that he did not want to spend that time in the hospital. He refused treatment, except for pain relief, and he and his wife Nancy began to plan for his death. When he died, his sons dressed him and laid him in his coffin, and then had him buried without the aid of a funeral director.
