A gentler war on drugs: Can boys on horses stop the narcotics trade in Northern Thailand?

Article Abstract:

Novice Buddhist monks of the Golden Horse Monastery are unlikely drug warriors, righteous crusaders fighting with faith, bravado, and martial-arts proficiency, the thriving narcotics trade in Thailand. Abbot Khru Ba and his young monks regularly venture into Burma to confront members of the United Wa State Army (UWSA), the largest drug-producing organization in Southeast Asia, to persuade traffickers to stop contributing to drug addiction.

Ricardo, a 16-year-old homeless Uruguayan boy describes his life on the street, sleeping outside a cinema theater or in public bathrooms, evading the police and strangers who molest children, and using drugs to forget his difficult life. Ricardo dreams of working in a bakery, getting married, and living in a proper home with his wife and family, but believes it can never come true for someone in his situation.
