Queen Kapiolani of the Sandwich Islands created quite a sensation when she visited Boston, MA, in May 1887. She was lavishly taken care of and met every dignitary in the city during her stay. When she left the cost of her visit outraged Bostonians, even while other costs were being covered up.

Almost 80 teams of people in eight divisions competed to make the best sandcastles at the 34th annual Sandcastle Day. One of the top 1996 Junior entries was a huge mushroom with a snake draped around it, which was created by students of Junior High, Dayton, OR.

The Great Thanksgiving Race of 1895 was the first automobile race in American history. Organized by newspaper publisher H.H. Kohlsaat, the race was designed to prove that cars would one day replace horses. Only 6 drivers competed for a prize of $2,000.
