The Dash For the Disk

Article Abstract:

Researchers are working on methods to store the massive amount of data produced by government and business. There are several methods available, such as computer-aided-retrieval, magnetic recording and optical disks, which operate with a laser beam, cost less than magnetic disks and can read and write almost simultaneously. Problems which are impeding a marketable system include questionable disk life span and expensive error correction procedures. Estimates of disk storage capacity range from 15,000 to 20,000 on a single sided disk to 100,000 pages of information on a double density disk. Kodak, 3M RCA and Optimum are all in various stages of development. Matsushita has developed erasable disks, but is being sued for patent infringment. The Mnemos 6000 is a modified disk system and Drexel has Drexon II, a small disk. Both are now on the market. Advanced, reliable disk systems which are part of integrated networks and transmission systems, are not expected to be developed before 1990. Photographs of disks are included.

Covenants not to compete

Article Abstract:

The employment agreements of disc jockeys and other broadcast personnel may contain valid covenants not to compete, or non-competition agreements, which prohibit these air personalities from going to work at competing stations within a given market. Courts will uphold reasonable covenants limited to specific geographic areas and time periods. Other employees may also be restricted by such agreements, depending on the circumstances of the particular situations. Employees usually receive additional compensation for compliance.
