A woman's work: we cling to the image of women as peacemakers--even if it no longer really fits

Article Abstract:

An out-of-date idealization of women as uniformly nurturing informs the peace movement protesting the 2003 Iraq war. This cliche was cast in its present form by feminists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Virginia Woolf when women wielded no political power and little influence. In a time when women such as Margaret Thatcher and Condoleezza Rice have exercised considerable authority in prosecuting conflicts, it is no longer tenable.
