APEC and the environment: is free trade sustainable?

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is working to develop approaches to balancing trade and environmental policies in its member countries. APEC members vary in their economic development and the priority they give the environment, but they started holding meetings regarding the environment in Mar 1994. A 1996 meeting produced a statement of commitment to sustainable development, but it lacked time frames and firm decisions. APEC is, however, encouraging private investment for the construction of ecologically sound infrastructure in member countries.
