America's bank: a history of the stock exchange, through good times and bad

Article Abstract:

The New York Stock exchange was founded in May 1792 to control speculation in newly issued government bonds. It grew along with the industrial revolution throughout the 19th Century. The huge bull market of the 1920s finally crashed in 1929. Post war prosperity after World War II restored the market. Today computers have revolutionized trading.

It didn't begin with Boesky

Article Abstract:

The criminal activities of Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken cap a long history of fraud at the New York Stock Exchange. In the 1900s Jay Gould and Jim Fisk manipulated stock and tried to corner the gold market. Arsene Pujo lead an investigation of J.P. Morgan and others in 1912. Securities fraud flourished in the 1920s.

Recent scandals at the New York Stock Exchange Inc. have caused the small investor to lose faith in stocks. The latest drop in the market was blamed on computerized trading. Millions still own stock, however, because in the long run, it offers better returns than other investments.
