A child recalls when her kid sister, whom she thought before was keeping her from making friends in the new place, was able to think of way to save their drowning dog. Her kid sister asked help from the skaters, who later invited them both to play with them.

Growing up cold

Growing up in a cold Vermont town long ago meant coal stoves, walking to school between five-foot-high snowbanks, and playing board games at night with elderly neighbors. It was a good life.
