The price of water under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project

Article Abstract:

The transfer of excess water from Lesotho to South Africa under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project was examined based on contract theory. The agreement involves the division of uncertain quantities of water and the payments after Lesotho's planned use of the water to generate hydroelectric power. The shareout from the project was calculated using the Nash bargaining approach. It was found that the agreement favors Lesotho more than South Africa.
